Paloteado of Cortes

The Paloteado is the festive hallmark of Cortes and is recognised as intangible heritage of cultural interest. This popular performance, which combines stick dances, satirical verses and spoken scenes around Saint Michael, includes characters such as the mayoral, the angel, the devil, the rabadán and groups of dancers.nnThe staging preserves traditional melodies and choreographies, including Cortesías, Pasacalles, Trenzados and Jota, among others, as well as a highly recognisable aesthetic: white clothing with green trimming, red sash and beret, and crossed scarves. Its relationship with other dances from the Ebro valley and its continuity across generations make it a living and distinctive cultural resource.
