We welcome you to the astronomical viewpoint of Fontellas, an extraordinary place to observe the stars due to the quality and darkness of its night sky.
Stars were once a subject of study and contemplation, and in the future, they may well become our destination as a species. There is something about their presence that evokes our deepest desires for knowledge and curiosity. Looking at the sky comforts and entices us; as the popularizer Carl Sagan said, something tells us that we are approaching the greatest of mysteries, and that is our path.
Poor lighting quality in cities affects the clarity with which the night sky is observed.
This type of pollution is caused by the use of poorly designed luminaires, which direct light upwards instead of downwards (where it is actually needed), as well as excessive power and use at inappropriate times.
The consequences of this lighting range from the waste of energy and money, to the glare experienced by drivers or the polluting effects caused by toxic residues from used lamps; in addition to the well-known loss of visibility of the night sky.
Fortunately, lower-consumption and higher-efficiency lamps are the least polluting, so the general trend is to progressively replace them.
Thus, little by little, the DARK SKY will be recovered.
