Missionary Handmaids of Jesus Sisters

This religious congregation was founded and inaugurated in 1954 by the parish priest Quintín Huarte Mugueta and Sister María Teresa Azpiroz Castellnou.\n\nOn 22 August 1946, the parish priest obtained the approval and blessing of the congregation.\n\nOn 11 October 1954, the first five nuns entered the institution. The building was officially inaugurated on 21 December 1954, with the attendance of the Archbishop of Pamplona, Enrique Gómez Delgado, and 40 other priests.\n\nIn October 1977, the first missionaries left for Rwanda. In Rugoso, they founded a healthcare centre made up of a small hospital, a maternity unit and a dispensary. Resources for its upkeep came from a farm and a market garden of around 20,000 square metres.
