The Watchtower and the “Castle” of Milagro

On the height overlooking the town, remains of the old fortified watchtower are preserved. It was built in 1098 by King Peter I as a lookout over the Tudela riverside area. Popularly known as the “Cueva de los Moros” or the “castle”, its strategic position, on an escarpment some 60 metres above the Aragón river, explains the place-name origin of the town, from the Latin miraculum, meaning “viewpoint”. The recent intervention in the area (2023-2024) has recovered this space as a landscape resource and a place for historical interpretation.
