A living tradition around San Isidro

Every May, as part of the celebrations of San Isidro, Barillas raises its Mayo: a poplar tree chosen by local residents, brought in at dusk and lifted with ropes in Plaza San Miguel. The ritual, which requires coordination and community strength, culminates when the young people climb up to release the ropes, accompanied by music, toasts and popular tastings.

The tradition, documented in Navarre and with parallels in other areas, symbolises the protection of crops and gratitude to nature. In Barillas it retains a participatory and intergenerational character: older and younger residents share techniques and responsibilities, ensuring its continuity.
