Monumental Olive Trees of La Plana

Cultural landscape and olive-oil tourism

In the area known as La Plana, especially on the estate called El Calvario, one of the most remarkable concentrations of ancient olive trees in Navarre is preserved. These are centuries-old trees, some probably millenary, which still produce olives and create a unique landscape of twisted trunks and open crowns.

These olive groves summarise adaptation to the riverside environment: clay and limestone soils, low rainfall and the north wind. They also keep alive an olive-growing tradition that today takes the form of visits, small tastings and photographic reports. Local owners are closely involved in caring for the trees through pruning, watering and health control. In addition, several teams have promoted dating studies, using growth rings and wood analysis, to establish the age of the largest specimens more precisely.

Visitor advice: access is by agricultural tracks. Avoid stepping on root areas, do not remove bark or branches and respect any enclosures.
