Cortes castle

It was one of the main medieval fortresses of the Kingdom due to its border location next to the Aragonese border. The scene of important historical events, it was the temporary residence of some of the kings of Navarre.

In the 16th century, this medieval jewel became the Palace of the Marquises of Cortes, a title created by Charles V. Restored on several occasions, it conserves a sturdy crenellated tower. Its façade shows the different alterations it has undergone and, therefore, the different architectural styles. On the first floor, flanked at the corners by four towers, the influence of the medieval walled enclosure persists, while on the upper floor and from a later period, an important gallery with pointed arched windows is preserved, just like in many Gothic buildings. Cortes Town Council acquired it in 1997 from the heirs of the Count of La Unión, its last inhabitant.
