Santiago Church (Funes)

Popularly known in the Ribera de Navarra as the Giralda de la Ribera. The church was built in the first half of the 17th century with 18th century additions. The exterior is of sober brick, with an elegant tower raised at the beginning of the 17th century. The main altarpiece from 1660 was remodelled in rococo style around 1760 and the canvases that adorn it are by Vicente Berdusán.

This church is an important part of the history of this town in Navarre. The grandeur of its tower and the general architecture of the monument stand out. Access to the monument is through a semicircular arch that leads to the courtyard or atrium. Above this arch, there are two rectangular openings, which are empty today.

According to tradition, the parish church is built on the foundations of the primitive medieval fortress of Funes. Looking at the buttresses of its walls on the side facing the town, one can see imposing carved stones that possibly come from that construction. However, there is nothing to suggest that the present parish church was built, perhaps as an extension, on top of an earlier one.
