Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The church, Romanesque in origin and historically linked to the Order of the Hospitallers of Saint John, preserves two bays at the foot with capitals and pillars from that early phase. Reforms in the 16th century and later gave the ensemble its present appearance, with ribbed vaults and features typical of the transition to the Renaissance.nnIn the presbytery, the large Renaissance high altarpiece stands out, attributed to Pietro (Pedro) Morone, with a pictorial cycle depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin, including the Annunciation, Nativity, Epiphany, Pentecost and Dormition. The ensemble, notable for its quality and good state of preservation, is one of the most distinctive artistic attractions in La Ribera. The bell tower and the volume of the church preside over the urban setting and serve as a visual reference while walking through the town centre.
