Hermitage of San Gregorio

Setting

1.5 km from the town centre stands Cabezo de San Gregorio, a garden hill replanted with pine trees and palm trees, with views over the vineyards and Moncayo. Picnic areas, fountains and interpretation panels on vine growing make it an inviting place to stop.

Building and Restoration

The small hermitage, with a single nave, gabled roof and whitewashed facade, was restored in the last decade, adding pergolas and accessibility without altering its simplicity. Inside it preserves a modern image of Saint Gregory of Ostia, protector of the fields.

A Living Tradition

Every 9 May, or on the nearest Sunday, the people of Murchante set out in procession from the parish church. After blessing the crops, the procession climbs to the hill, celebrates mass and shares a breakfast of bread, wine and sugar. The “joyas” are then held, children’s races in which parents run with their children as an offering for the harvest. The family atmosphere and music make the day a unique experience.

Activities

The hill is part of MTB routes and of the May charity walk “Murchante se mueve”. Its night-time visibility, thanks to the discreet lighting of the hermitage, has made it a popular photography spot, especially at spring sunsets.
