Church of San Esteban

The great silhouette of Arguedas is its church of San Esteban, a temple whose current structure was built starting in 1560 under the direction of master Joan de Ancheta. After his death, his son Martín de Ancheta completed the work at the beginning of the 17th century, including the tower that today marks the town's profile. The result is a brick church with a stone base, austere on the outside and surprisingly rich on the inside: a single nave, transept, and polygonal apse, with star-shaped vaults and decorated keystones that reflect the Renaissance taste of the Ribera region of Navarre.

In recent years, the parish has undergone a profound structural restoration due to issues with the tower. After about two and a half years of work, the temple reopened for worship in 2022, also recovering the historical entrance on the south side. The intervention has allowed for the consolidation of the structure, renovation of facilities, and improved accessibility, ensuring that the visit is safe and that the building continues to be the ceremonial heart of the town.

Touristically, San Esteban offers two values: heritage and local experience. Heritage, because the interior preserves Baroque altarpieces and an interesting program of imagery that frames the liturgical calendar. Experience, because here the life of the town beats: solemn masses, occasional concerts, festival gatherings, and moments linked to agricultural culture. If you travel with historical or photographic interest, make sure to enter mid-morning: the side light that penetrates through the flared openings highlights the profiles and details of the vaults.

Visit tip: combine the stop at the square with a walk along Calle Mayor towards the Town Hall and the Muruzábal House; in just a few meters, you cover three centuries of local architecture.
