Old Hospital
The old hospital of Falces was a welfare building erected in 1869 thanks to the testamentary donation of Romana Echevarría and Baltasar Zapata, together with significant municipal contributions. It operated as a foundation administered by the Town Council, which provided annual funding from the municipal budget. The Bishopric, owner of the building, was represented by the parish priest, and care for the sick was entrusted to the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, who settled in Falces on 4 September 1869.
In addition to its hospital role, the sisters also took on educational duties, especially for poor girls, teaching religion, basic literacy and needlework. In the 1960s the building ceased to function as a hospital, although the sisters continued teaching and maintained an elementary secondary classroom for girls until October 1972.
Before this hospital, there had been the Hospital de Gracia, located in the square where the El Casino society now stands. Documented before 1600, it operated until the new hospital was built in 1869. It was then acquired by local residents to establish a recreational society, the origin of today’s casino.
