Marcilla Castle (Marcilla)
Built in the first half of the 15th century by Pierres de Peralta. In addition to its defensive function, over time it also served as a palace, as it was the mansion of the Marquises of Falces. Fortunately, it escaped the systematic destruction that Cardinal Cisneros carried out around 1516 on all the castles of Navarre to prevent future rebellions in the kingdom. The enclosure has a quadrangular ground plan and is surrounded by a moat, the remains of which can still be seen. It is a massive construction, the lower part of which was built with quarried stone, while the upper part continued to be built with brick. As a defensive enclosure, it has a powerful tower at each of the four corners of the enclosure and other more slender towers in the middle of the wall on three of its four sides. Inside the building, there was a parade ground around which the rooms were distributed. Legend has it that this fortress possessed a rich armoury and in one of the chambers of the castle was kept the legendary sword of the Cid, called the Tizona.
