Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Portal

The origin of this hermitage dates back to the Middle Ages, when an image of the Virgin was venerated at one of the entrance gates to the town. This is where its name comes from: Virgen del Portal. Its location reinforces its symbolic value, as it stands at one of the historic access points to the town. Popular devotion to this image, especially intense in times of epidemics and calamities, when people turned to it for protection, led to the construction of a church in its honour at the beginning of the 17th century. The present building is the result of two major construction phases: a first chapel built around 1611 and an important Baroque extension at the end of the 17th century, when the transept, sanctuary and new chapels were added, shaping the ensemble as it is known today.

Built in exposed solid brick, it has a very sober facade, with a semicircular arched doorway and a Baroque tower with a single octagonal body, one of the most recognisable elements of the ensemble.

The interior follows the characteristic layout of convent churches, with a Latin cross plan, a single nave and a transept covered by a dome on pendentives. The barrel vaults with lunettes and the abundant Baroque plasterwork decoration fill the space with light and movement.

Its heritage includes Baroque canvases and several Rococo and Neoclassical altarpieces. The main altarpiece, dating from the late 17th century, is a splendid Baroque work that presides over the church and gives meaning to the devotion to the Virgen del Portal, one of the most cherished in the town.
