Basilica of the Virgen del Olmo (Azagra)

In Azagra we can admire one of the most beautiful Marian carvings in Navarre in the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Olmo. The image dates from the 14th century, is Basque-Navarrese-Riojan in style and has a distinctive feature in its curious clothing.

It is an image 107 cm high, made of polychrome wood but very much retouched in the successive transformations it has undergone over time.

Mary maintains the Romanesque frontality, while the Child breaks the symmetry of the whole by standing on the left leg and the frontality by turning the lower part of his body. The Virgin's right arm, forming a right angle, holds a pommel as an attribute and the left arm, at a slight angle, rests on Jesus' shoulder.
